Give him a (relatively) fair price on the silver and gold, but do this for him to compensate:

Run some "completed auction searches" on ebay to help him determine the numismatic value of the copper, zinc, aluminum, and nickel. Lots of collectors with lots of money out there. I've had friends that wanted to dispose of collections, go to a coin dealer and get an offer. I put the stuff up on ebay for them and have gotten triple the offer several times. There are many tips (not tricks) to maximize the high bid.

Well...there were coins from roughtly 30-40 countries all in envelopes...dating as far back as the late 1800s. No gold coins readily identifiable...lots of silver..I saw the queen of englands face about a bazillions times and some of the king before her. Oz NZ Africa Usa Iraq Iran China Japan India..yadda yadda. I dont think Im going to bother appraising the batch unless hes just willing to dump it for a couple hundred max. I want the bullion not a bunch of rare pennies..if i do purchase them..ill post some pictures. :wink:

I hate to see that happen. I think anyone with a significant collection should educate their spouse / children / heirs enough about numismatics so that at least they'll be able to dispose of the collection wisely. And if you're lucky, the kids will appreciate the collection enough to keep some of it. Knowledge is power!
